Banded Agate Geode Half

Maharashtra, India
$58AED 276
One specimen — when it's gone, it's gone.

This agate geode half formed roughly 65 million years ago when silica-rich hydrothermal fluids slowly infiltrated a gas pocket in Maharashtra's Deccan Traps flood basalt. The exterior is a beauty in its own right — a deep rust-red, botryoidal iron-oxide skin, knobbly and kidney-surfaced, that in places thins and breaks open to reveal glimpses of the pale crystalline agate beneath. Turn it to the cut face and the story opens: a thick band of translucent grey-blue chalcedony, laid down in concentric layers with each successive episode of silica deposition, rings a glittering druzy quartz centre — the final phase of crystallisation, when free silica precipitated directly from solution. Held to the light, the grey-blue chalcedony band passes it beautifully, glowing soft and luminous around the sparkling core. Sourced by the Shaikh family through their longstanding network of artisanal collectors in Maharashtra's Nashik and Pune districts, this piece travels the same ancient trade routes that have carried Indian agates to the world for centuries.
