Chalcedony on Celadonite-Coated Basalt
In the Deccan Traps basalts of Maharashtra, silica-bearing hydrothermal fluids sometimes deposited chalcedony — a microcrystalline form of quartz — in rounded, botryoidal masses rather than faceted crystals, giving the mineral its characteristic smooth, waxy, cloud-like appearance. The pale grey-green groundmass coating the basalt matrix is celadonite, an iron-rich mica that forms early in the zeolite-suite paragenetic sequence, giving this piece its muted, organic palette. The contrast between the white chalcedony lobes and the dark celadonite-dusted matrix is characteristic of early-stage mineralisation in Pune and Nashik district zeolite localities, sourced by the Shaikh family's artisanal collectors who hand-select natural-form pieces from the field.
