Celadonite-Tinted Chalcedony Nodule on Basalt
This compact nodule formed inside a vesicle within the 65-million-year-old flood basalts of the Deccan Traps, Maharashtra. Silica-rich hydrothermal fluids percolated through the cooling lava, depositing celadonite-tinted chalcedony across the nodule's upper surface while leaving the surrounding basalt matrix and salmon-pink chalcedony rind intact. The green is a celadonite-derived tint running through the massive silica rather than a crust of green crystals. The Shaikh family, who have worked the Deccan trap localities for generations, hand-select these self-standing nodules for their sculptural quality — pieces that need no stand and tell the full story of their volcanic birth in one fist-sized form. The contrast between the green-tinted crown and the black basalt host is a hallmark of the Maharashtra zeolite suite.
