Stilbite is a tectosilicate zeolite that crystallises in the late hydrothermal stage of Deccan basalt alteration, growing its characteristic fan-shaped or bow-tie sheaves in cavities left by escaping volcanic gases. Here, salmon-peach stilbite crystals have nucleated directly atop a sparkling druzy quartz lining, creating a vivid colour contrast between the warm mineral and the silver-white matrix. The vesicular basalt base — pocked with gas-bubble cavities typical of Maharashtra's flood basalts — has been ground by hand into a conical pedestal that lets the piece stand on its own — the crystal top is untouched natural growth, the foot is shaped stone. Collected by the Shaikh family from the prolific zeolite-bearing flows of the Western Ghats, where stilbite of this salmon hue is particularly prized.
